· the importance of unstructured play for children
· what boredom actually contributes to our brains
· the value of sunlight and social play
· the role of play in lifelong learning
· how to make time outside more attractive to your child than screentime
· and much more

This book is a gem。 Written by the founder of the 1000 Hours Outside movement, it provides an alternative to the “more more more” society in which we live。 Particularly as parents, we need to make deliberate choices about what opportunities our children will have。 By overscheduling our children’s lives, we are doing a huge disservice to them, despite being well intentioned。 What they really need is more unstructured time to play。 Children learn through play in ways that the traditional classroom This book is a gem。 Written by the founder of the 1000 Hours Outside movement, it provides an alternative to the “more more more” society in which we live。 Particularly as parents, we need to make deliberate choices about what opportunities our children will have。 By overscheduling our children’s lives, we are doing a huge disservice to them, despite being well intentioned。 What they really need is more unstructured time to play。 Children learn through play in ways that the traditional classroom cannot replicate。 When this play is done outside, benefits are even greater。 We live in a rapidly changing world and “it is predicted that by 2030, 85% of the jobs that will be available haven’t even been created yet。” If that is even remotely true, how do we expect children to thrive In that workspace if we only put them through the same assembly line that has existed for decades? Perhaps, we need to change our perspective and consider that one of the best things we can do now is to give kids opportunities to be bored, to be creative, to play and explore, and to become confident and adaptable in an ever-changing world。 There is research as well as many other books referenced within this one。 It’s a book I wish I could have read when my kids were younger。 But thankfully, it’s never too late。 I truly believe that everyone, even older adults and/or those without kids in the home, can take away something positive and actionable from this group。 This is the book I will now give to expecting parents。 Can our actions change the entire world? Perhaps not, but we can change things for our own families, and I need to believe the effects of that will ripple outward。 。。。more

I’ve followed the 1000 Hours Outside movement for a while and it has encouraged me so much as a homeschool mom。 Spending time outdoors is so important and this book is all of the evidence you will need。 It was exciting to read the book, which was like a compilation of some of my favorite podcasts episodes。 This one will have a permanent spot on my bookshelf。

When I first heard that Ginny was writing a new book, I was so excited for it to be released。 Ginny does so much research for her podcast, that I knew her book would be filled with so much information and inspiration。 Having read her first book, I knew that she was a master anecdotal storyteller, weaving in research with experience, so I was so hopeful that this next one would be the same。 I am so glad that it was! Ginny expertly weaves her own story with the research she's done about outdoor time, free play, and family expectations for life。 It is clear she has read books upon books to add to her own book, and left me with a list of books that I now want to check out。 \Ginny transparently shares her own vulnerable story that resonated with me as a mom of littles--the long hours inside were HARD and taking the kids outside literally changed the trajectory of our family。 She encourages parents by sharing that her own family embraces screens (especially in the car since her kids didn't like the car) when necessary, combatting the time with extended hours outside--we don't need to be screen-free to instill outdoor and playtime values in our kids。 Ultimately, I really loved that Ginny shared her own struggles with her readers in order to encourage us instead of pretending that she didn't struggle like the rest of us。 If you are interested in reverting to some old time play values that our current society has lost, and ant some research to back up your "why," this book is a great choice for you。 It will encourage you, make you laugh, and equip you with information that will inspire you to make small changes to your life that will make a huge impact on your whole family。 I can't recommend this book enough! 。。。more

I’ve been somewhat familiar with the 1000 Hours Outside movement for a few years now and have listened to some of the podcasts, so I was excited when I saw that there was an opportunity to be on the launch team for Until the Streetlights Come On。 Of course, I expected the book to provide several reasons for getting our kids outside。 This book totally exceeded my expectations! Ginny touches on so many different areas in the book, including how toys have evolved over the years, how sunlight affects our bodies, why it seems that colleges are more selective these days, how to prepare our kids well for an uncertain future, the social benefits of playing outside, how letting our children play outside can help us in the overall process of eventually letting go of our children, and more! One of the quotes in the book that stood out to me the most was the following: “We’re limited。 We’re lacking。 We’re busy。 We’re overwhelmed。 And yet we have these beautiful children, each unique in a way that will never again be replicated。 Nature increases our resources to parent them in a worthy way, all the while enhancing our own life’s journey。” After reading this book, I am even more encouraged to take my kids outside as often as I can。 This book is geared to parents, maybe moms more specifically, but anyone who spends time with children and has some role in a child’s life could benefit from reading this book。 。。。more

Ginny is such a breath of fresh air! So much goodness and inspiration。 My "to read" list grows every time I hear from Ginny, but she brings so much research and wisdom that it's easy to be excited to get outdoors。 Ginny is such a breath of fresh air! I have found tremendous value in Ginny's podcast and her 1000 Hours Outside Movement, but found this book disappointing。 The writing quality itself was good, but seemed like a book report of other books vs an original, standalone manuscript。 I have found tremendous value in Ginny's podcast and her 1000 Hours Outside Movement, but found this book disappointing。 The writing quality itself was good, but seemed like a book report of other books vs an original, standalone manuscript。 。。。more

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book! Ginny does it again with her brilliant way of weaving research, stories, and questions to make you think。 It made me laugh, cry, and stop my husband in the middle of his book 10000000 times to read him sections that were just too good not to share right then。 Everyone needs to read this book whether you have kids or not。 Our society as a whole will greatly benefit from this thought provoking book。

I was given the privilege of reading this book prior to its release and it was every bit amazing as I anticipated it would be。 It is full of facts, but retaining a charm and inspiring tone。 The structure of the book flows from subject to subject and I loved the questions and prompts at the end of each chapter。 If you are a parent who feels outside of the crowd or perhaps you want or need a change, then this book is a must read。

This book means so much to me。 I have been trying to do the 1000 hours outside challenge with my two little girls this year。 When a friend introduced me to this challenge last year I was so excited。 I’ve noticed a shift in childhood for the past several years and would always talk about how I never see kids outside playing anymore。 My favorite part about childhood was the hours spent outside playing and exploring。 This is something I am proud to be doing for my own children。 This book is so insp This book means so much to me。 I have been trying to do the 1000 hours outside challenge with my two little girls this year。 When a friend introduced me to this challenge last year I was so excited。 I’ve noticed a shift in childhood for the past several years and would always talk about how I never see kids outside playing anymore。 My favorite part about childhood was the hours spent outside playing and exploring。 This is something I am proud to be doing for my own children。 This book is so inspiring and full of so much research and knowledge。 I now have a list of other books I want to read and learn from。 I highlighted so much and am excited to share what I’ve learned with others who desperately want childhood to be what it once was。 。。。more

A beautiful reminder and call to arms that the only thing we need more of is time outside together。 Less screens, less sports, less obligations。 Nature provides in so many unexpected ways if you trust and give it a chance。 I loved this book for the sentiment backed by years of research and experience!

I'm half way through the preview of "Until The Street Lights Come On" and it's like sitting down having an open and honest conversation with a close friend。 The book has a lot of eye opening yet well explained facts, written in a positive and approachable way that isn't shaming or nagging。 The chapters are not too long and they are broken into short segments that make for easy reading whenever you have a few minutes。 It's the affirmation you need that you're doing the right thing or the nudge yo I'm half way through the preview of "Until The Street Lights Come On" and it's like sitting down having an open and honest conversation with a close friend。 The book has a lot of eye opening yet well explained facts, written in a positive and approachable way that isn't shaming or nagging。 The chapters are not too long and they are broken into short segments that make for easy reading whenever you have a few minutes。 It's the affirmation you need that you're doing the right thing or the nudge you need to start doing the right thing and the "You got this!" that we all need to hear! 。。。more

What were moments that made you feel alive?" Could my children really experience the same joy, excitement and memories I had as a child? After finishing this book, I confidently know the answer is "YES!"Ginny is a trailblazer and a cheerleader at giving parents and grandparents hope for our future generation。 I would highly encourage you to purchase this book。 You will be glad you did。 Get out there, come alive and adventure until the street lights come on。 。。。more

This book is so inspiring。 As a mother of two young children and a teacher at a play-based cooperative preschool, Ginny’s message about the importance of play really resonates with me。 This book gives parents permission, backed by extensive research, to stop worrying about grades and enrolling our children in every extra-curricular activity and instead let them be children。 Let them play。 As the book states repeatedly, play is not a break from learning, play IS learning。 This book is a quick rea This book is so inspiring。 As a mother of two young children and a teacher at a play-based cooperative preschool, Ginny’s message about the importance of play really resonates with me。 This book gives parents permission, backed by extensive research, to stop worrying about grades and enrolling our children in every extra-curricular activity and instead let them be children。 Let them play。 As the book states repeatedly, play is not a break from learning, play IS learning。 This book is a quick read, and I highly recommend it to any parent, educator, and anyone else who spends time with children。 。。。more
